StumbleUpon upgrades Facebook Timeline app to include frictionless sharing

StumbleUpon's new Facebook Timeline app

StumbleUpon has become the latest service to enable Facebook frictionless sharing via an update to its Facebook app. Now, Stumblers can decide to share all their StumbleUpon activity seamlessly to Facebook Timeline.

Timeline apps, or Open Graph apps to give them their full title, are different than older Facebook apps in the sense that Facebook users only need to grant apps initial approval to access their profile data and News Feed. This way, Facebook apps are permitted once but can publish many times without the need for re-authentication – hence the phrase “frictionless sharing”.

StumbleUpon users can enable the new Timeline app in their Settings page. Once activated, Stumbled websites, Likes and follow updates will be shared to Facebook in real-time. Many updates will be grouped together to ensure a more streamlined format.

StumbleUpon offered some reasoning behind the update on their blog,

“What you do on StumbleUpon says a lot about you. Your Likes and Interests reveal the things in life you’re most passionate about, and the Stumblers you follow represent both your friends in the real world and people sharing your interests in the StumbleUpon community. All this information can be brought to life with the new StumbleUpon Facebook app, which features improved integration to Facebook Timeline.”

Some great Timeline apps already released include SoundCloud, Ticketmaster and The Guardian.

  • Hi Darren,

Just to be clear, pages that you Stumble to are not being published to Facebook when you visit them.  They are only published if you Like a page by clicking the Thumb Up button.

It's also important to say that Facebook applications have always been able to authorise once and publish many times.  The key difference with Timeline is that richer and more diverse actions can now be published, and publishing can be done as part of a user's interactions with the application.  That's why it's called frictionless! :)

    •  @majelbstoat Thanks for the clarification on SU sharing. I don't use the service, never really got into it. When I refer to older Facebook apps I mean the ones that are pre September 2011 when frictionless sharing was first introduced. To the best of my knowledge, the SU Facebook app didn't include this prior to this week, although I may stand to be corrected? Frictionless sharing is different from actions like run, listen or play that were introduced in January. These actions are just apart of it now.
