It might be one of the most used web browsers but the real life Firefox isn’t so common. So imagine the surprise of this couple in China who came home to find an actual Firefox in their home.
The small Firefox, another name for the Red Panda, came into the couple’s house in Leshan City in Sichuan Province last week and became somewhat of a novelty with the neighbourhood.
Its digital namesake was originally called Firebird but due to a copyright claim on the name Mozilla changed it to Firefox. And their reason for calling their browser Firefox?
“It’s easy to remember. It sounds good. It’s unique. We like it. And we weren’t able to find any other project or company even remotely similar to a web browser that uses the same name.”
Since the name-change The Mozilla Foundation has been working to help protect these endangered animals. If you want to see some more Firefoxes Mozilla has installed a live webcam in Knoxville Zoo’s Red Panda enclosure (@cubcaretaker).
