Google announces Search by Image for desktop

Google have announced Search by Image for desktop at their Inside Search event in San Francisco today. This latest feature allows users to perform a search on Google by simply dropping an image into the search box.

Users have four options to conduct a Google query using an image; they can copy and paste an image URL, upload an image from their desktop, drag and drop an image into the search box, or use the Chrome or Firefox extensions that will be made available shortly.

Google Search by Image for desktop

The technology behind Google Search by Image is largely based upon that first developed for Google Goggles, although this has been “scaled up for the Web”. The new Search by Image feature will be rolled out globally over the next few days.

Google also announced Google Images with Instant due to be rolled-out in the “coming weeks”.
